Hecho en Palm Beach

Posted on January 14, 2016

As firm believers that resortwear exists not on a hanger or on a shelf, but as a state of mind, we are big supporters of brands that embody the carefree spirit of days spent lounging on the beach, on a boat, or by the pool (see Huxter, Lilly, et al). Naturally, nascent menswear brand Hecho fits within that oeuvre–a pareo that will always remind you of après beach drinks at the Soggy Dollar or slides you can’t bear to shake the Santa Monica sand out of. Designed and produced entirely in Mexico City, Hecho is a curated assortment that transports you to, paloma in hand, to an infinity pool on the Mayan Riviera. Founder Jack Miner draws inspiration for the line from his uncle, contemporary furniture designer Tucker Robbins, as well as esteemed Mexican Functionalist architects like Barragán, Pani, and O’Gorman (whose names are lent to Hecho’s pieces). While Hecho is designed as a menswear line, Lauren was eager to borrow some of the pieces–like the beautiful bags, rendered in slubby linen and supple leather. We’re sure you’ll find Hecho’s beach essentials in your weekender again and again; this winning combination of beauty and simplicity has us excited to experience Hecho’s next destination.

Parsonage Punch

Posted on November 25, 2015

IMG_5207 IMG_5194 IMG_5076 IMG_5084 IMG_5137 IMG_5217

It’s been a while since last we met–Van’s been busy on a painstaking restoration of a c.1820 Greek Revival in Washington, Virginia, and after much blood, sweat, Farrow & Ball paint, plaster, and only a few tears, we’re giving you a peek inside as The Parsonage gets fixed up for Thanksgiving. Opening your home to guests creates the ideal time to rummage through your china cabinet. We are fond of mixing styles and sources — trad heirlooms, like grandma’s transferware platter; conversational motifs, such as the dressy fox glasses from sis Noelle and polo player napkins from friend Max; and secondhand finds, like the stag carving set and simple silver punch bowl. We’ve doled out this advice in the past, but when you’re expecting a crowd, stock a self-service bar and/or make a punch so your guests can help themselves while you’re busy putting out fires in the kitchen. If you’re looking for an easy seasonal punch recipe, you’ll find one below, courtesy of our friends at Martin Miller’s Gin. Cheers!

Van’s Holiday Wish List 2013

Posted on December 6, 2013

vanswishlist

Here are some of the things Van’s hoping to find under the tree this year. We’re loving the beachy detailing on shirts from Huxter Goods in Rhode Island, the break-the-bank luxe links from Palm Beach’s own Trianon, and the classic trunks from Solid & Striped — if you’re heading somewhere warm for the holidays, Solid & Striped is offering our readers a 20% discount from now until Christmas (use code NECESSARY20). For the patriotic man in your life, look no further than USA-made Terrapin Stationers cards (Brooklyn, NY), Lostine cutting boards (Philadelphia, PA), or a handsome Shinola watch (Detroit, MI). For more ideas, check out our gifting pinboard on Pinterest.

N&P’s Guide to Gifts for the Host or Hostess

Posted on November 13, 2013

holidayhost

‘Tis the season–those holiday party invites have started streaming in. If you’re looking for something festive to bring your holiday host or hostess, we’ve got you covered. (Throwing a party? We’ve got you covered there too.) No need to reinvent the wheel here–just a few simple guidelines: (1) Cut flowers are typically a no-no, as they require the host to drop everything and find a vase. If you want to send flowers, either send some ahead of time or as a thank you the day after. (2) Consider the host’s taste–sometimes it’s best to wait until after you see their decor before deciding on something specific, like a throw blanket. If you’re going that route, but don’t want to arrive empty handed, bring a bottle of bubbly or a nice olive oil. (3) Save the bigger-ticket items for a special occasion–a weekend away, for instance–for a cocktail party, a bottle of booze or a nice candle (can’t go wrong with Ralph Lauren’s Holiday scent) are perfectly fine. Let us know in the comments if you’ve got favorite hostess gifts or other helpful tips. And while we’re on the topic, Tuckernuck, one of our favorite online retailers, is popping up in Georgetown’s Cady’s Alley to help with your holiday shopping–we hope you’ll join us for the opening party tomorrow!

4:00pm // Rose Park, Georgetown // Watching dusk fall on Georgetown’s picturesque East Village with fellow blogger Proper Kid Problems. We enjoyed chatting and snapping photos in suits and shorts despite the unseasonable DC heat. Check out more photos from our meetup on his blog, The Proper Life.

Van picked up this lightweight chino suit on his trip to Rome at Gutteridge, which is sort of a fast fashion Brooks Brothers with slim Italian cuts.

Last weekend, the East Hampton Historical Society held its annual Antiques Show at Mulford Farm in East Hampton, New York. The show featured furniture, art, decorative objects, and jewelry, displayed al fresco on a beautiful summer Saturday. We had our eye on some nautical-themed barware, colorful vintage textiles, oil paintings of the sea, and the gorgeous Hermès accessories at Mantiques Modern‘s booth.

Surf’s Up

Designer collections for fast fashion retailers can be hit-or-miss (see: Target x Neiman Marcus), but Van’s a big fan of the Michael Bastian x Uniqlo line of polo shirts. The summery designs have details that belie their sub-$20 price tag, and put Bastian’s killer menswear style at a price point that’s within reach. We snapped these photos before having tacos and Coronas at Surfside, one of our favorite Glover Park haunts.

Derby Day Dreamin’

Posted on May 1, 2013

We frequently find ourselves window shopping at one of our favorite online destinations, 1stdibs, a marketplace featuring some of the best antiques, fine art, and vintage fashion in the world. With the Kentucky Derby and Virginia Gold Cup kicking off the spring steeplechase season this Saturday, we took an extravagant look at how we’d throw a Derby Day party–no holds barred. Whether you’re betting big on Verrazano, donning a Derby hat, or just enjoying a frosty mint julep, here’s to a fun and fabulous day at the races.
