Parsonage Punch

Posted on November 25, 2015

IMG_5207 IMG_5194 IMG_5076 IMG_5084 IMG_5137 IMG_5217

It’s been a while since last we met–Van’s been busy on a painstaking restoration of a c.1820 Greek Revival in Washington, Virginia, and after much blood, sweat, Farrow & Ball paint, plaster, and only a few tears, we’re giving you a peek inside as The Parsonage gets fixed up for Thanksgiving. Opening your home to guests creates the ideal time to rummage through your china cabinet. We are fond of mixing styles and sources — trad heirlooms, like grandma’s transferware platter; conversational motifs, such as the dressy fox glasses from sis Noelle and polo player napkins from friend Max; and secondhand finds, like the stag carving set and simple silver punch bowl. We’ve doled out this advice in the past, but when you’re expecting a crowd, stock a self-service bar and/or make a punch so your guests can help themselves while you’re busy putting out fires in the kitchen. If you’re looking for an easy seasonal punch recipe, you’ll find one below, courtesy of our friends at Martin Miller’s Gin. Cheers!

WESTBOURNE FALL PUNCH

1.5 bottles Navy strength gin (such as Martin Miller’s Westbourne Gin)
1 gallon fresh press apple cider
Fresh mint leaves
Elderflower liqueur (such as St. Germain)
Slice 6 lemons and 3/4 cucumber, put in large dispenser or large punch bowl. Pour in gin. Juice 3 lemons and put in mix. Pour in 1 gallon apple cider and add one small jigger of elderflower liqueur. Slap 10-15 mint leaves and add with some large blocks of ice.

Five Proper Pieces: Van’s Picks for the Living Room

Posted on February 10, 2014

Inheriting a family antique doesn’t mean you have to decorate in Grandma’s WASP-decay aesthetic. Showcasing pieces from different styles and time periods is reflective of the way we collect today and gives a room a certain time-worn character. In this living room scheme, the geometric lines of the bookcase and side table balance the organic curves of the lamp and sofa; a handknotted rug underfoot lends depth.

Five Proper Pieces: Lauren’s Picks for the Living Room

Posted on February 8, 2014

Lauren’s living room layers neutral toned fabrics and incorporates splashes of bright colors. The zebra rug adds a fun, modern balance to the classic, gold table.  Lauren’s tufted couch is feminine, a touch glam and lends sophistication to the room.

Summertime Salsa

Posted on July 3, 2013

N&P Salsa

There are few things more reminiscent of 4th of July BBQs gone by than this dish.  Discovered by a family friend of Lauren’s, it has been a staple at many lakefront celebrations for over 20 years.

{PS – Be sure to rinse the corns and beans before adding; & you don’t need a juicer for the limes – just a fork}

Heirloom Tomato Salad

Posted on July 3, 2013

tomato salad

Tomatoes are nearing their peak season, which means they don’t need much help to taste great. Just a little oil, garlic, basil, and salt for a side that will have your guests asking for seconds. (Psst–it’s also great the next day or as a bruschetta topping!)

Bedside Manner

Nightstand 2

DSC_7991

A nightstand is the perfect way to add pizzazz and personal expression to your bedroom–here’s how Lauren does it.
1) LESS IS MORE. You want the space to feel tidy. Clutter adds stress to an environment that should feel tranquil and relaxing. 2) FLOWER POWER. Fresh flowers are too much work for my bedroom (the pollen and petals create a mess + the scent is too much for bedtime). Check One Kings Lane for gorgeous silk arrangements. 3) ADD SOMETHING QUIRKY. I love this Harry Allen piggy bank. It’s unusual & draws the eye in, plus the height is a great middle point between my flowers and my lamp. 4) SOMETHING SCENTED. Kai products are my fave, so I keep a linen spray and a candle on my nightstand for easy access before bedtime.

Summer Salad

Chicken Salad 2

A homemade chicken salad is an N&P favorite for parties, picnics, or casual poolside bites. This fresh mix can be eaten as a sandwich or atop a bed of mixed greens. The best part? This foolproof dish tastes even better on days two and three.

Mix & Max

Posted on February 11, 2013

Raw food is all the rage–so our friend (and talented decorator) Max Sinsteden has dreamed up some groovy smoothie recipes for y’all to enjoy. We’d been salivating over his gorgeous Instagrams of these sweet treats, and he was more than happy to lend us his tricks for making a delish morning drink. For most of these recipes, he recommends a professional-grade Vitamix blender, which can handle juicer-worthy fruits and veggies (apples and leafy kale) that regular blenders can’t. More recipes and tips follow after the jump.

Merry Christmas

We hope your holiday is filled with cheer and that Santa brings you everything you want. Thanks to the flocked tree, it’s even been a white Christmas in Florida. Van woke up with this little bundle of joy under the tree–Chester, a miniature dachshund and spaniel mix. If he ever stops moving, we’ll have more photos of the little guy.

It is finally time to unwind to begin “Christmassing.” We have been enjoying the merriment by shopping, gift wrapping, and toasting with cranberry infused cocktails. Summer, in particular, is enjoying the festivities–enamored by gifts and bows, she is the quintessential Christmas pup.
